Moving forward

I promised you I would get caught up, and I am a woman who stands by her word. So, here we go!

So, DevilDoc couldn't go on our vacation to the Big Island and my friend Jai went with us to help me with the boys! We stayed at Kilauea Military Camp in Volcano National Park. It was cute, quaint and in a great location!

We got right out there and hit the trails as soon as we arrived. We stopped to look at Kilauea Iki Crater and had the brilliant idea (at the time) to hike it. Oh boy...it was a challenge!

This is the flat straight part; what you don't see is the rocky uneven terrain just on the other side!

There we go...

Magoo had his moments; Jai and I switched off carrying him and Pookins helped out by carrying our pack :)

Thank GOD there are no pictures of us AFTER that little excursion!! It drizzled, got hot, got cold, rained, got cold again. I imagine we looked like drowned rats coming out of the crater! Needless to say, we went back to the cabin and were in bed by 7pm..no dinner or anything!!

The next day we went to Jagger Museum and stood in front of Hele'somethingorother crater. The vent there was going CRAZY and the lady inside said it hadn't been like that for 25 years!

We headed out on Chain of Craters Road to reach the beach where the active lava flow is happening. We went in on the national park side so the hike to the edge was FIVE MILES one way...umm, no. We didn't make it out that far. But, Jai did take Pookins to the lava crossing the road! Magoo wasn't up for the trip :(

There was also a VERY cool sea arch at this location...

Later that evening we headed up Mauna Kea to do some star-gazing. It was absolutely stunning! Of course, there are no pictures from that but take my word for it...if you EVER have the opportunity to view the stars at 9000 feet DO IT! Breathtaking!

...third and final day coming soon!
